Ways of Contraception and Having Safe Sex

Most of the couples may have sex but the most important part is to taking contraception or always use protection. Practicing safe sex protects both parties from potentially contracting any STDs and unwanted pregnancies.

All this is achieved by simply using a condom but it doesn’t go without saying it’s not 100% guaranteed. You never know if the condom may have broken halfway until the penis is out of the vagina. If that were the case, the most common solution is for the woman to take an emergency contraceptive, known as the morning-after pill.

With that said, the pill isn’t meant to be taken frequently due to its unhealthy side effects. Luckily, there are safer and easily accessible alternatives. There are 2 types of contraception (birth control):

Modern contraceptive methods

Types of condom

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, these are the most effective to the least effective methods of modern contraceptives.

  1. Male and female sterilization
This method prevents pregnancy permanently by undergoing a surgical procedure. For males, they undergo vasectomy, while females undergo tubal ligation.
  2. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC)
A birth control device inserted into the female body that can last between 3 to 10 years, such as Intrauterine Devices (IUD) and Hormonal Implants.
  3. Short-acting hormonal methods
Many women opt for this method as it’s easily accessible and isn’t as costly compared to LARC.

    • The Pill: A daily contraceptive pill that needs to be taken consistently for 3 weeks, and stop during the week of expected period, on a monthly basis.
    • Mini Pill, Patch, Vaginal Ring, Shot: Taken every 3 months
  4. Barrier methods
Such as condoms, diaphragms, sponges and cervical caps are used each time during sex. It’s complimentary for women who are already undergoing contraceptive treatment as it serves as another layer of protection against unwanted pregnancies.

Rhythm Method: This method of contraception doesn’t use any mechanical device, nor is it a result of hormone manipulation. However, it’s crucial for women who have chosen to practice this to be knowledgeable about their ovulation cycle.

Besides, there are a few ways for women to determine their fertility window:

  • Calendar rhythm
  • Basal body temperature
  • Cervical mucus
  • Predictor kit

The predictor kit is much more straightforward and accurate compared to the first 3 and easily found at pharmacies. It’s a simple procedure where you’ll test your urine for signs of ovulation. If it comes out positive, it means that you’ll be ovulating within the next day or 2 (within 24 to 36 hours).

Advantages and disadvantages of Natural Contraception

Upside:

  • No need for prescription or health checks
  • No medication or surgical procedures
  • Cost-saving

Downside:

  • Difficult to accurately determine fertility window
  • Have to avoid sex during certain times of the month
